Published Works

The following books have been produced through Axiom Publishing located in Stepney, South Australia. The process of producing a book is lengthy and involves the initial concept where we formulate an idea into a workable book project. This is where the fun and late nights start as I than move into the research phase of the process, this involves researching library database online, sifting through thousands of images and text and at times physically viewing historical documents and photographs.

This latter is very interesting as I sometimes have the privilage of handling glass plate negatives from over a 100 years ago. I find this physical connection to be very humbling. The lengths our early photographers went through just to produce a glass plate negative, let alone the actual image taking and subsequent processing in the darkroom with toxic chemicals, is enough to respect these pioneers. They documented our history in their images and for some this meant an early death through chemical poisoning. The death of their peers did not sway others from pursuing this craft and it is to them that we should be thankful for showing us a glimpse into ourselves through our history.

Once research is under way, my next phase is to start photographing modern images to build the book. This can take up to 12 months or more and involves extensive travel gathering images of people and places, objects and scenery, all the while research and writing is continued. The book is not layed out until we feel we are near finished and able to fill 132 pages, i say finished as this is the first 'finish' of many. Changes are not often seen until the pages are starting to gel together and this sometimes requires additional rsearch and photography to make the book look good for you the readers. Overall the whole process from conception of idea to signing off and sending to the printer can take over 18 months and up to a further 6 months before the book hits the shelf.
